Ring us early — that is the single best thing you can do.
Dental problems have a habit of arriving at the worst moment, and they rarely improve on their own. If you have severe pain, swelling, an injury or a broken tooth while we are open, call the practice. The earlier in the day you ring, the better our chances of fitting you in before we close.
Is this an emergency?
If you are unsure, ring anyway and let us judge. These are the reasons people most often call:
- Toothache that is severe or throbbing
- Swelling in the face, jaw or gums
- A tooth knocked out or gone loose
- A tooth broken, chipped or cracked
- A filling or crown that has come away
- Bleeding that will not settle
- An abscess — pus, swelling, sometimes a fever
- Any injury to the mouth or jaw
With all of these, sooner is genuinely better. Waiting tends to narrow the options.
What to do before you get here
A few things that help while you are waiting for an appointment:
A tooth knocked out
- Hold it by the crown, never the root
- Rinse it gently — do not scrub it clean
- Put it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk
- Ring us immediately; with this one, minutes matter
Severe toothache
- Rinse with warm salty water
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the packet
- Keep off anything very hot or very cold
- Ring for an urgent appointment
A broken tooth
- Keep any fragments you can find
- Rinse the mouth gently
- A cold compress on the outside will help the swelling
- Ring us as soon as you can
A filling or crown that has come out
- Keep the crown safe if you still have it
- Chew on the other side
- Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy will hold it for a day or two
- Ring us to get it re-cemented properly
What we see most often
Toothache & Pain
Pain that lingers or wakes you at night usually means infection, decay or a crack below the surface. We find the cause first, then deal with the pain.
Broken or Chipped Teeth
Whether it was an accident, something hard bitten by mistake or enamel that had already thinned, a broken tooth can normally be built back up quickly.
Dental Abscess
An abscess is an infection that will not resolve itself. Swelling, throbbing, a foul taste or a temperature all mean it needs seeing now rather than next week.
Lost Fillings & Crowns
Losing a filling or crown leaves the tooth underneath exposed and often sharply sensitive. Re-cementing or replacing it settles that straight away.
How it goes
From the phone call onwards:
- You ring — describe the symptoms so we can gauge the urgency.
- We find you a slot — the same day wherever it can be done.
- We look properly — examination, x-rays if they are needed, and a diagnosis.
- We deal with the pain — relief first, then the treatment itself.
- Anything further gets booked — no loose ends left hanging.
